CASE STUDY OF COMMON DEFECTS AT SITE
DATE: DECEMBER 2022
PREPARED BY: BALWINDER SINGH, ASST. BUSINESS MANAGER KATALINE INFRAPRODUCTS PVT. LTD.
LOCATION: MULTIPLE LOCATIONS - NORTH INDIA
OBSERVATION:
Image Problem and Observation Causes Preventive Measures
Bubbles
Bubbles formed under the surface of Thermoplastic road marking lines Evaporation and expansion of the moisture trapped in surface of concrete Allow time for road surface to dry completely.
Allow for proper curing of concrete surface
Do not apply thermoplastic immediately after rain or under Dew conditions.
Ensure marking is done after a minimum 75 days of finish coat of Bitumen / Concrete surface
Let primer dry completely before application.
Ensure surface temperature is above 9 deg C.
Colour Changes
White Colour Changes to Yellow or Dirty White Overheating during preheating of thermoplastic. Refer to the Manufacturer reccomendations regarding the temperature.
Mixing of  the old and new material. Gradually increase and constantly monitor the temperature to check viscosity and colour
Clean the boiler after every batch
Peel Off
Thermoplastic road marking line peel off Improper adhesion to road surface Always ensure proper curing of concrete or asphalt surface has been done prior to marking
Moisture, grease and oil remain on the road surface. Remove the existing road marking prior to application of new road marking
Low road surface and ambient temperature. Apply primer to ensure better adhesion in case of application of old road surface.
Road surface to be propoerly cleaned.
Grooves and scratch marks
Marks and striations seen on the surface of marking Discharge point of screed shoe choked with stones, dust or other foreign particles Clean the shoe filterAdjust the angle of the applicator shoe.
Tyre Marks
Marks of vehicle tyres Less curing time given to thermoplastic Allow proper curing of minimum 75 days of the asphalt surface
Traffic released early Allow thermoplastic curing of minimum 2 hrs, prior to allowing vehicles
In sufficeint curing or bleeding of asphalt, which transfers from tyre to the road marking Wash the surface with water to remove temporary blackening
